For years, I shared the story of the home we were building while keeping the home we already loved private. As we prepare to leave, an unexpected certainty about who comes next has made letting go feel less like loss and more like grace.

For years, The Essex Ranch was a future we could imagine without leaving the life we already loved. Then, within a single week, the RVs sold, our Fort Worth home went under contract, and the life we had spent years preparing for began to arrive all at once.

As the ranch begins to feel more like home, I find myself standing between two chapters… grateful for the life we have built, aware of what I will miss, and beginning to understand what the life ahead will ask of us.

Last week, the plastic finally came off the windows at The Essex Ranch. I knew they would be beautiful, but I didn’t know they would be this beautiful. A reflection on Marvin windows, glass corridors, and the moment a house begins to feel like home.

Not completed… just becoming.

Every new week at The Essex Ranch seems to bring another round of decisions… but lately, it also feels like something deeper is happening. The circular drive is beginning to take shape, cabinetry is going in, the greenhouse foundation has been poured, and little by little, the property is beginning to feel less like a construction site and more like a future home.

There is a moment… right before everything changes… when a house is no longer just a project, but not yet fully a home. This weekend, we found ourselves standing in that quiet… noticing the shift, the stillness, and the beauty of what exists just before life fills the rooms.

We’re not just building a house at The Essex Ranch. We’re building a place for our children, the people they love, and the generations that will one day gather around our table. This is the story of why every space was designed with intention… and who it was truly built for.

A reflection on choosing with discernment… and letting go of what no longer asks to be defended.

A quiet moment in the build, when light, stone, and silence begin to reveal who the rooms already are.

A winter pause at The Essex Ranch as the new year begins and long-imagined details start to take shape.

The house is still finding its shape… and maybe so am I. In this quiet middle between vision and completion, I’ve learned that even the waiting has a story.

This isn’t just a love letter to The Essex Ranch. It’s a love letter to the unexpected, to the man who builds beside me, to the land that keeps teaching us, and to everyone who’s been part of our first year. A single story, written in many voices.

From hand-cut stone to hallway mishaps, this update from The Essex Ranch is full of progress, personality, and playful deer. The house is taking shape, the land is watching—and we may have accidentally locked ourselves in a glass corridor.

Long before we ever walked this land, stories were already rooted here. This is the beginning of what we’ve uncovered—and what still lives beneath our feet.

As winter loosens its grip and spring tiptoes in, the land at The Essex Ranch begins to breathe again. Between fierce winds and blooming wildflowers, we’re learning what it means to slow down, listen, and grow.
