The Main Lake Project
What started as a repair turned into a much larger undertaking once work began. Draining the lake revealed years of buildup and a scope far beyond initial expectations.
This page documents the progress of rebuilding the Main Lake at The Essex Ranch. From excavation and clay lining to reshaping the basin, this is the work required to do it right and make it last.
Updates will be added as the project continues.

Latest Progress: Main Lake
With the lake fully drained, excavation is well underway. Years of accumulated sludge have been removed, exposing the clay beneath. That clay is being reused to line the basin, creating a stronger seal than what existed before.
As work progressed, the scope expanded beyond original estimates. The island alone proved significantly larger than anticipated, increasing both time and material requirements. What began as a repair has become a full structural rebuild.
Excavation and basin shaping during this phase are being handled by Bo Zabinski of Bowman Land Solutions, whose team is responsible for setting grade, depth, and overall structure. Once complete, the lake is expected to hold two to three times more water than it previously did.
This stage represents the structural groundwork of the project. Dock construction and the gradual return of water will follow once excavation and lining are complete.
The goal of this rebuild is straightforward: create a lake that holds water reliably, supports long-term use, and exceeds the original capacity. This phase focuses on getting the structure right- depth, grade, and seal- so everything that follows is built on something solid.
